Calcium grit allows your birds the ability to regulate their calcium intake naturally as opposed to calcium supplements in the water that force calcium into the diet which can lead to liver damage from a calcium overdose.  A laying hen needs more calcium than the cock in the cage with her.  A hen that lays less eggs needs less calcium than a hen that lays more eggs.  Only the bird knows how much calcium is needed which they will consume free choice if given the opportunity.  Keep a fresh calcium grit available in the cage at all times except during the austerity period.
